Innovations in Green

Its setting in a part of the world where water and resources are scarce caused Israel’s entrepreneurs to seek ways to challenge norms.

  • The modern technology of drip irrigation was invented in Israel and first perfected in 1959 at Kibbutz Hatzerim in the south of the country. Following its patenting, the method had spread to Australia, North America and South America by the late 1960s.

  • For centuries, man attempted to heat water using heat from the sun.  But, it was in the 1950s that solar-water heaters were installed atop almost every building in Israel – and are still there, saving energy and making use of the planet’s natural resources.

  • “Better Place” electric cars are coming – from Israel.  The first commercial electric cars are soon to start rolling in Israel and in Denmark – designed by Israelis.  Israel has begun the deployment of a charging infrastructure for electrical cars in several cities and in 2011 electric car owners will be able to charge their batteries (or change batteries) at thousands of locations throughout Israel.
